Anthony McCall: Solid Light Works, The Hepworth Wakefield, Wakefield

16 February – 3 June 2018

The first major UK exhibition of Anthony McCall’s work in over ten years, including the UK premiere of three new installations.

Best known for his large-scale, immersive light installations, McCall's new ‘solid light’ works use only projected light and thin mist to create the appearance of sculptural forms in space. In keeping with previous installations, visitors are invited to become a part of the work themselves by directly engaging with the projected forms. McCall describes the angles and proportions of the David Chipperfield galleries as being ‘unusually sympathetic’ to the exhibited works.

The exhibition also explores McCall’s early work in film and light from the 1970s, and examines his working process. His meticulous preparatory work is revealed through a large display of drawings, sketchbooks and maquettes.
