The gallery hosts the first UK exhibition of a new body of work by the acclaimed American artist.

Known for photographing tableaux of small town America, Crewdson's work is both dramatic and cinematic. While his images often capture what appear as disturbing or surreal real-life events, they are in fact elaborately staged and lit using motion picture film equipment and techniques.

Cathedral of the Pines is typical of Crewdson's work. The narrative is played out against the backdrop of the rural town of Becket, Massachusetts, where the Cathedral of the Pines hiking trail is located. Echoing 19th-century western landscape painting and nodding to the artist's interest in 20th-century melodramas, the photographs present characters dwarfed in the surrounding forests in scenes and are charged with a sense of ambiguity and isolation.

The gallery's excitement at being the first UK host for this new body of work means that, for the very first time in its history, it has devoted all three of its exhibition spaces to just one artist.
