View a selection of etchings and mezzotints from JMW Turner’s celebrated Liber Studorium, a series of 70 landscape engravings published in 14 parts between 1807 and 1819.

The Liber Studorium or ‘Book of Studies’ absorbed Turner for more than 20 years and has been described as one of his greatest achievements. Intended as a manual for the aspiring landscape painter, this ambitious undertaking was praised by John Ruskin and studied by John Constable as well as other artists of the day, helping to raise the status of landscape painting in the early 19^th century.

For Turner and his contemporaries, engravings were the main means by which their work was seen by a wide audience. This display will include examples by many of the engravers that Turner worked with, and some of the best of his day, including Charles Turner, Thomas Lupton and Henry Dawe.
