New English Art Club 2017, London SW1

16 June 2017 to 25 June 2017
NEAC New English Art Club, Mall Galleries, The Mall, London SW1 The winner of the Contemporary Arts Trust NEAC 2017 prize is Alex Maczkowski. In some ways his little drawing is conventional. The figure in the bottom right harps back to the first NEAC artists at the end of the 19th century like Sir George Clausen. However, remove the figure and you are left with a haunting landscape which very much fits with those rare and beautiful Symbolist landscapes of the 1890s and 1900s as painted by Vilhelm Hammershoi and Fernand Khnopff. The artist's modernist technique, which is very much of today, is in the way he has broken up the image into squares, as any artist might do to transfer the composition to canvas, but then treated each square in a subtly different manner. Thus, what first appears to be conventional, becomes innovative, exciting and haunting.
